The Final Frontier

Greetings,

My name is Calum Bucknall, a third year university student studying Computer Games Design. For the year, I shall be using this blog as means to keep public updates on my final project, going into my logic and reasoning, presenting information that I learn through the process, and explaining the steps I take towards my end goal.

As of this moment, there are three concepts I hold for my final project;

  1. A turn based RPG that blends Eastern storytelling and progression, and micromanagement style, with Western turn based combat mechanics. This would be rather code heavy, but also allow me to delve into the design aspects to a greater degree.
  2. A rhythm game that utilises a drum pad as a form of controller, exploring how such a game could help children develop an interest in the growing electric music genre. Another code heavy project, based around the utilisation of the drum pad as a game controller.
  3. A look into Western Fantasy Action RPG combat mechanics, and how they can be made more immersive. This is possibly my vaguest, most open-ended concept, but would once again be code-based, while delving again into design aspects.
These are all themes that have been conceived pre-reading. I have done some light reading on my first two ideas, which will be expanded upon in my next post within the next couple of days, as I had intended for this post to be little more than a brief introduction. I hope that by the end of this project, I can look back on this post as evidence of how much I have achieved.
